Jumping In

When I started thinking about what my hybrid course would look like, I became very overwhelmed because I was not sure where to even start. A couple of days this week I tried working on it, but just wasn't having the greatest success. I didn't know how to even begin. However, that all changed today because the textbook that I ordered for the course arrived! This really helped me to design the structure of my course and organize my topics. The textbook is great for the module design, because it is already divided into course topics. I have been able to dedicate a large portion of time this afternoon to working on the course, and I am feeling much better now and feel that this is something I can conquer.

In chapter one, one item that stood out to me was that when designing an online course, my focus should be on what do I want students to learn. Reading that really helped to re-focus and energize me as I began to brainstorm with my course. I went to the course description, read the learning outcomes multiple times, and started listing all of the skills and topics students needed to learn in this course. When I approached the task from that point of view, the ideas of how I can facilitiate and guide students to learn the material started flowing. At this point, I am very excited to continue working on the course.

  1. I think you hit on a key point in online learning. Instead of "What am I going to teach?" it becomes "What are my students going to learn?"

  2. I'm anxious to see how your course turns out, especially since it won't technically be a blended course (at least we won't call it that) but a lot of the work students do will be online. It sounds like you're making great progress...and in a doc program as well. Kudos to you, Becca!

  3. Hello Becca,
Hoping that I can start to jump in and rely to the blogs as I keep working ti try and develop my own. Being in special education I'm always wondering about multiple intelligences and what sort of intelligence is drawn to the challenges that we see in online education - assuming that some will love it while others, well, not so much.
